About me
Hi, I’m Brian. I am a Commercial Retail Consultant with 27 years experience in retail management roles within commercial, trading and operations departments for industry-leading companies. I’ve had the opportunity to deliver negotiation strategies, yield management, pricing architecture, commercial planning and executive development for both suppliers and retailers in the FMCG industry.
One of my key responsibilities involved managing €400m in turnover which required me to continuously (1) negotiate yields; (2) implement processes which optimise the supply chain, and (3) harness purchase efficiencies and dynamic pricing structures.
Under my remit, I have developed and implemented commercial and trading leadership structures internally, and externally in an advisory capacity to retailers. This has enabled me to lead a number of business transformation projects based on both strategic planning and emerging market dynamics. Finally, representing retailers at an international level has provided me with a thorough insight into markets, methods of working, and a broad network of contacts in European retail and wholesale.

The coaching delivered was extremely beneficial to me, Brian had great poise during the sessions as he probed and asked the harder questions to ensure there was flow during the time frame. Brian was skillful at using the strengthscope profile in our coaching session to explore the ‘hidden’ themes which highlighted key patterns and development areas in relation to my coaching goals. His combination of coaching skills, business insight and experience, made the flow of the conversation work well to get to the heart of the issue and some practical steps to move forward quickly.
I found Brian very effective and knowledgeable on many areas of business, I would have no hesitation in proposing Brian and his skill set to other people in my business.
I found Brian to be a highly effective, supportive, and empowering coach. He was very professional from the outset, reassuring me that our session was confidential, outlined how the session would run and that he would take notes. He put me at ease straight away and stayed focused on my desired outcome, always bringing me back to my why. He listened intently and asked curious and challenging questions that helped get to an insight in our first meeting that was very powerful for me. At the end of the session, Brian gave me some challenges/homework to help me get unstuck and remember the insight that I arrived at. Extremely effective for business owner manager as there is very little opportunity to reflect on your individual role and performance in the business.
Personally, I found the coaching made me self-evaluate the current ways I conduct myself both personally and professionally. I have now become more focused on the tasks at hand and have a clearer picture of the overall targets in my business, while not getting caught up on the smaller / minor details that would have affected my mood and dealings with employees. From a personal point of view, I have a healthier work-life balance than I did prior to the sessions. By implementing a more specific focus professionally, I have freed up more time personally to undertake other passions outside of work.
First time to attend a one-to-one coaching session and found it to be excellent.
Brian’s approach to coaching is very effective. While Brian may not have had the in-depth technical knowledge initially, he has the ability to quickly get a high level of understanding the situation.
He does this by asking pertinent and relevant questions which shows Brian has a lot of experience and knowledge in business management.
Throughout the three sessions the conversation was always steered so that the answer came within, Brian did not offer solutions.
I would recommend Brian to any of my colleagues or friends.
Brian is a consummate communicator. He is a good active listener, and clearly articulates his commentary. He thinks on the go and retains accurately the salient points in a discussion. He knows when to challenge, when to be silent, when to encourage. His understanding of people and their behaviours, coupled with his commercial knowledge and an ability to identify the real goals, helped us to appreciate our roles better, and to have the confidence to take calculated risks.
Brian is a positive influencer, with tried and tested commercial and interpersonal skills.

Coaching has helped me to reassess some of the habits I have built up in my working life and think about how to move forward with my career. It’s been particularly useful to help reframe how I manage expectations, to think about the successes (rather than just the failures/barriers) and the impact small improvements make towards a larger scale change in the way I work/progress. I’ve found it invaluable during a really stressful, fast paced time in my working life to be able to reflect on the issues and find solutions with someone who is impartial. It’s helped me to put in place some really tangible actions that have had a real and meaningful impact on my ways of working and in turn my outputs.
Found the sessions to be very helpful, practical, looked at all angles from business, personnel and other people's positions who will be affected by change, I found it very easy to engage with Brian, good listener and was very comfortable sharing personal business with him. When finished sessions great feedback and pointers to work on and plan for next session which have been a great help. Overall, when we finished the sessions, I had a clear roadmap as to the direction for the future and most importantly a clear mind which I did not have going into sessions.
Brian provided structure and guidance to each session. We did not always start out with a specific target at the beginning of each session, but by the end of the time I came away with a key message whether it be how I portray myself to others or how I manage my time. Brian drove the session so that I was the one making the suggestions to the issues I faced and by doing this I felt more comfortable in tackling/addressing the problem. If I ever deviated away from the topic, Brian was able to bring us back in line to what we were trying to address. If I ever feel myself like I did prior to these sessions, I would happily refer back to Brian for some further coaching in the future.
I have benefited greatly from my coaching sessions with Brian. I have been in my current purchasing role for a number of years now and have struggled to remove myself from this process. Brian led me through an analysis of benefits of particular roles to the company, as well as exploring my own personal aspirations, and it became apparent to me that my time and energy should be focused on my Director/ Owner role within the business rather than being consumed with the purchasing task. This is a decision that would have been difficult to make had I not gone through this analysis. I am now in the process of delegating my purchasing responsibilities which will allow me to divulge the majority of my time to working on the Strategic future of the business. I came to deeply understand my own aspirations and strengths through this process which had brought increased enthusiasm to my role.
Brian was a great coach, he’s a clear communicator and was very goal-oriented throughout the sessions.
As this was my first foray into coaching, I have nothing to compare it to. However, I was very impressed by both Brian as a coach and the entire process and it is my intention to provide this for some of my senior managers here in the company.
